Tokyo Cherry Blossom Season Draws Massive Crowds!
April 5, 2025
During Tokyo’s cherry blossom seasons, Meguro River, Ueno Park, and Chidorigafuchi are always so crowded with people viewing the flowers that the trains stop running completely.
To accommodate our many customers who want to enjoy these beautiful areas and their “sakura” blossoms, here are our recommendations for the best viewing times.
1. Meguro River Cherry Blossom
Festival 2025
Meguro River is overflowing with people from dawn until dusk, making it hard to relax while viewing the beautiful cherry blossoms of the area.
If you want to take it easy when enjoying the cherry blossoms, get up a little earlier between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., and go for a morning walk. You will have the cherry blossoms all to yourself, and you can take as many photos and videos as you like.
We recommend the following area for this.
2. Ueno Park Cherry Blossom Festival 2025
Ueno Park is one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo. From March 15 to April 6, the 2025 Cherry Blossom Festival will be held there with approximately 800 Somei-Yoshino trees in full bloom with many people there specifically to see them. A lively atmosphere abounds with many stalls and performances by artists for all visitors to enjoy.
But even beyond that, Ueno Park has a variety of cherry blossom viewing spots. The cherry blossoms lining the main street, the cherry blossoms reflected in Shinobazu Pond, and the elegant cherry blossoms around the Kiyomizu Kannon Hall and Toshogu Shrine are just a few of the highlights.
The recommended way to enjoy the area is to visit twice, once during the day and once during the night. During the day, guests can enjoy the vividness of the cherry blossoms in the bright sunlight, and then spend the rest of the day enjoying lunch at one of the many delicious restaurants in the Ueno area or shopping for souvenirs at Ameyoko. At night, return to the park to enjoy the fantastic nighttime cherry blossoms illuminated by 1,000 lanterns.
Ueno Park, where you can enjoy the cherry blossoms both day and night, is the perfect hanami spot for those who wish to spend the entire day enjoying the cherry blossoms. The hanami spots are spacious and the paths are wide, so crowds will not be a major concern here.
3. Chidorigafuchi
This location near Otemachi, Tokyo Station, and the Imperial Palace is a popular viewing spot. Unfortunately, however, not many cherry trees were in bloom in 2025. Usually during this season, cherry blossoms surround the pond, making it a beautiful place to enjoy their colors. Perhaps 2025 is a bad year for cherry blossoms because of the weather? Hopefully, things will be better in 2026, but we cannot recommend this area this year.
Summary
Meguro River: Hanami in the early morning, before the morning rush, is recommended.
Ueno Park: No matter what time of day you go, the crowds are not bad.
Chidorigafuchi: This season was not so good, so let’s try again next year!
