Beyond Tsukiji? The Grilled Fish Delight at Shinpachi Shokudo
April 6, 2025
No need to travel all the way to Tsukiji or Toyosu—Shinpachi Shokudo serves up authentic Japanese fish dishes all across Tokyo. Open from 7:00 in the morning, Shinpachi Shokudo, a “Washoku” restaurant, is popular for serving oily fish charbroiled to perfection. Curious to see if this authentic Japanese cuisine loved by the Japanese could also be enjoyed by foreign visitors, we paid our own visit.
Atmosphere
Shinpachi Shokudo has a simple but traditional atmosphere. The restaurant is clean and offers both counter and table seating. The restaurant is crowded with regular customers from early in the morning, showcasing how representative it is of Japanese foodie culture.
Menu
The essence of Shinpachi Shokudo is the authentic grilled fish set meal that can be enjoyed for breakfast. Even the Japanese are impressed by the taste, and you can experience the traditional Japanese breakfast culture here. Each set meal consists of grilled fish, miso soup, rice, and pickles, and is characterized by its preparation that makes the most of the flavors of the ingredients.
We sampled three different set menus:
Silver Salmon Set:
The fish was grilled to perfection and paired perfectly with the rice and miso soup. It is a dish that gives you the best of a traditional Japanese breakfast. It has a few bones, so first-timers should be careful when eating. This is a dish for more experienced customers.
Salt Grilled Salmon Set:
This dish is easy to eat, retaining the soft texture of salmon. This is recommended for those trying Japanese-style grilled fish for the first time. This dish is fairly easy to dig into, so even chopstick beginners can enjoy themselves.
Mirin-Marinated Mackeral Set:
The sweet and sour taste of this dish is addictive. However, it has many bones, so it is more suitable for people who are used to eating fish. Those who are accustomed to Japanese food will enjoy this profound flavor.
These meal sets are characterized by seasoning that brings out the best of the ingredients and the savory aroma unique to charcoal grilling. The flavor is authentically Japanese, offering a deliciously local experience.
Store Information and Access
Shinpachi Shokudo is a chain restaurant with multiple locations in Tokyo. The one we visited is the Meiji-Street branch, which is about a 5-minute walk from Shibuya Station.

Tips for Visiting
Shinpachi Shokudo is very popular, so it is not uncommon to see lines of people waiting, especially during lunchtime. To visit at a less crowded time, we recommend visiting in the early morning just after it opens or after 2:00 p.m. Weekends are especially crowded, so it would be wise to visit on a weekday.
Reservations are not generally accepted, so it is advised to visit with plenty of time to spare. If you have the presence of mind to enjoy waiting while imagining how delicious the food will be, you will enjoy yourself even more.
In Summary
Shinpachi Shokudo is a restaurant serving authentic Japanese food. Foreign tourists, especially those who want to try grilled fish, are encouraged to visit. You will surely enjoy your visit.
