Meiji Jingu’s Beauty and Heritage
Main Attractions
Do you enjoy sightseeing?
In the middle of Tokyo’s hustle and bustle, there is a quiet and green sanctuary known as Meiji Jingu Shrine.
Meiji Jingu covers 70 hectares of beautiful forest, and in its beauty, you can really experience a “Japanese” atmosphere. As soon as you pass through a large wooden torii gate, you’ll be in a different world, surrounded by tranquility and nature. You’ll even forget that you were ever in Tokyo at all, making it the perfect place to take a break from the busy city life.
If you come here wearing a beautiful kimono, it will seem as if you have traveled back in time to the old days of feudal Japan! You can even take pictures, though please be aware that some areas of the main shrine building prohibit it as they are regarded as sacred places.
History
Meiji Jingu was built in 1920 in memorial of Emperor Meiji. Known as the leader in charge of modernizing Japan, he is enshrined here as its main deity.
The forest, despite its size, is noteworthy for being completely man-made! Trees from all over Japan were brought here and now they grow here as if it was a natural forest. Designed specifically to last forever, it’s a great example of the Japanese love for nature and their far-sightedness.
The original building was unfortunately destroyed during the Second World War but was rebuilt after in the original design. Nowadays, the facility serves as a precious place where visitors can authentically experience the beauty of traditional Japanese architecture.
You may be able to see a traditional Japanese wedding!
You may find people having their weddings here!
Meiji Jingu Shrine is well-known as a popular spot for weddings, so you will often find beautifully dressed brides and grooms with their families here. The bride in a white kimono (shiro-mugaku) and the groom in a black montsuki hakama look very beautiful, so its tempting to take pictures, but please be sure to respect their privacy on their special day!
Reaching Meiji Jingu
Getting to Meiji Jingu Shrine is Easy!
The train is probably the easiest: 5-minute walk from JR Harajuku Station or 5-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Meiji-jingumae Station
Hours: Sunrise to sunset (varies according to season)
Admission: Free! (Some facilities, such as the Treasure Hall, charge a fee.)
We recommend that you visit in the morning, when there are fewer tourists. The sacred atmosphere here will entrance you.
In Summary
Meiji Jingu Shrine is more than just a tourist attraction; it is a special place where you can feel the heart and traditions of Japan. During your stay in Tokyo, why not take a moment to calm your mind and soul in this lush green sanctuary? The tranquility, beauty, and depth of Japanese culture will relax you. Before leaving, take the time to purchase some good luck charms or ema (wooden boards to write your wishes on), so you can more easily remember your visit. Just remember, that if you try and pray the traditional Japanese way, it’s 2 bows, 2 claps, and then a single, final bow!
