Food Culture and Specialties at Tsukiji Market!
April 16, 2025
Tsukiji, known as Tokyo’s good culture center, is a treasure trove of gastronomic delights that attracts foodies from all over the world. It once flourished as the world’s largest fish market, and even today, the outer market is lined with many famous restaurants.
Must-Try Specialties and Restaurants We Recommend
Fresh Sushi
Tsukiji is famous for sushi. Many sushi restaurants in the outer market use fresh seafood caught that very morning. In particular, high-end choices such as “Ootoro” and “Uni” (sea urchin) are superb.
Recommended restaurants: Tsukiji Tama Sushi Harumi-dori – At the Harumi-dori branch of Tsukiji’s long-established sushi restaurant Tama Sushi, you can casually enjoy authentic Edomae-style sushi using the freshest ingredients. At the counter, the sushi chefs do their work right in front of you. It is easily accessible from Ginza, making it the perfect place for your first sushi experience.
Tamagoyaki
Tsukiji’s tamagoyaki has the perfect balance of sweetness and flavor. The thickly baked omelets, made using artisanal techniques, are perfect for snacking on.
Recommended restaurants: Marutake – Tsukiji’s leading omelet specialty restaurant. The moist texture and elegant sweetness of the eggs is what make them so irresistible. It is also fun to take out and eat while strolling around the outside market.
Tips for Enjoyment
・Visit early in the morning to enjoy the freshest catches!
・Visit during the week, as Saturdays are especially crowded.
・Although more and more stores speak English, it is useful to learn some simple Japanese phrases.
The Tsukiji Outside Market area is densely packed with a variety of restaurants. In addition to delicious sushi, there are also shops for tableware, cooking utensils, and other food-related items.
Enjoy an unforgettable dining experience in Tsukiji, where the best of Japanese food culture is gathered.
Supplementary information about the move to Toyosu Market
In October 2018, the Tsukiji main market (inner market) was relocated to Toyosu, but the Tsukiji Outside Market area continues to operate as it did before. This article introduces stores in the Tsukiji Outside Market area. The Toyosu market is also open for tours, and many great restaurants have relocated there, so if you have time, we recommend visiting both.
